Would You Buy a Game Remake?

I am writing this on the same day 2K released BioShock: The Collection, which is a remastering of the BioShock games. Also, on episode 59 of The College Gamers Podcast my co-host and I had a great conversation about the announcement of an Arkham Batman remake that looked amazing. Skyrim is getting a remake that I am pumped for. It seems that the video game market is flooded with remakes of older games. Not to mention Nintendo bringing their older titles to new devices.

It is obvious that remakes are aimed towards the more hardcore fans of a game. Being honest with myself, I am 100 percent going to buy the Skyrim remake at full price. It does not make sense, there is no new gameplay or story, I already have over 300 hours logged on steam but that is because I LOVE that world and lore. At full price, the average gamer would most likely not buy a game they already have just  because of a graphical upgrade.

Remakes are not a bad thing. I would make an argument that remakes are good for the video game industry. It gives fans of a series something to do between releases of new games. Remakes also make extra revenue that can fund projects while not hurting productivity because remakes can be contracted out to other studios.

The original Arkham Batman games are not on the current generation consoles. So making a remake that takes advantage of modern day console power makes since but should not be sold at full price. Because a remake gives no new content but does take time and work to remake the game, it shouldn’t be sold too cheap. Finding a balance will be important for game developers who want to sell remakes. As long as remakes are bought, remakes will be sold.

RIP Battleborn

Battleborn was released May 3rd, 2016 and developed by Gearbox Software. For anyone who played the Borderlands series, the game should feel very similar. The two games’ art styles were very similar if not the exact same. The two games share similar dialogue, both being humorous and random, and also have very entertaining characters. The game boasted a roster of 25 playable characters, each with their own special abilities and play style. Players had the choice to fight one another in online matches or play cooperatively with friends or play alone through the game’s story. The game was looking to be a hit but unfortunately is not talked about much today and it only took three months for the game to go on sale for $15 dollars on Humble Bundle. So what happened to Battleborn?

overwatch1280jpg-6daa73_1280w

Overwatch is often credited for the downfall of Battleborn. Battleborn and Overwatch both have an impressive roster of heroes that all promise a unique experience. Overwatch lacks the humorous light hearted dialog and instead replaces it with small dialog interactions between characters that gave players a small peek at the characters’ story. Overwatch also promised a newer experience compared to Battleborn. Battleborn shared too much with Borderlands, the games even used the same quest marker. Borderlands is a special kind of game that gives the player a game experience that can’t be found in any other triple A game. The game had a new concept but lacked the feel of a proper new IP from Gearbox Software. Battleborn still has the same team based play style that worked so well in Borderlands. In contrast, Overwatch was the first FPS developed by Blizzard. Blizzard already has a huge dedicated fan base combined with two recent hits, Heroes of the Storm and Hearthstone. Overwatch did come out almost a month after Battleborn, but Blizzard built hype for the game months ahead by allowing Streamers and important community members into the close alpha. Overall, the PR for Overwatch was handled better while being a completely new experience. Keep it up Blizzard!

Why More Games Are Pushing for eSports

In the past few years, we have seen game developers making pushes into the eSports realm. Some of these companies include Activision-Blizzard and more recently, EA. As eSports grow in popularity, more traditional sport outlets are taking notice. TBS has broadcasted a CS:GO tournament while even the sport juggernaut, ESPN, has dedicated a corner of its website to eSports and the occasional broadcast on ESPN-2. What might be some of the draws for game developers to promote their game as an eSport?

There are many reasons why a game developer would want their game as a popular eSport. To begin with the obvious, the publicity is kind of a big deal. Seeing pro gamers play is always exciting. They play at a higher level than us mere mortals, which adds an elevated level of excitement and fun. This fused for a lethal combination of “I want to try this game”. In other words, eSports is an effective way of reaching an audience that might not have played the game otherwise. Also, the company’s share of the advertising revenue does not hurt.

However, eSport popularity can be a double edged sword. An eSport game needs to hold the attention of not only the public but the eSport teams as well. If a game can attract the best eSport teams then the fans are sure to follow. With big cash tournaments, games attempting to be the next big eSport can attract the biggest players in eSports, which brings more viewers. However, if an eSport can’t afford cash prizes as big as competitors they are doomed to be overshadowed by other games. By staying in the eSport cycle, it keeps the attention of fans and players alike. Overall, eSports can seriously add to the longevity of a game.
