TCGP 60 – Obama The Playa

On this supremely secretive episode of The College Gamers Podcast: Chris Metzen is retiring and Mike needs a moment. Poland is getting a really cool stamp. Assassins Creed is getting a collection around one of it’s best characters. Hearthstone is getting a bundle to help new players. Zelda amiibos might leak the release date of Breath of the Wild which in turn leaks the release of something else. We are not super impressed by Metal Gear Survival. Taft and Mike want a game that combined Hearthstone, Assassins Creed, and Titanfall and we might have the game to get that (very odd) fix. Mike found a super creepy platformer. What game are we playing? And MORE! I tell you! On this awesome episode of The College Gamers Podcast!

Would You Buy a Game Remake?

I am writing this on the same day 2K released BioShock: The Collection, which is a remastering of the BioShock games. Also, on episode 59 of The College Gamers Podcast my co-host and I had a great conversation about the announcement of an Arkham Batman remake that looked amazing. Skyrim is getting a remake that I am pumped for. It seems that the video game market is flooded with remakes of older games. Not to mention Nintendo bringing their older titles to new devices.

It is obvious that remakes are aimed towards the more hardcore fans of a game. Being honest with myself, I am 100 percent going to buy the Skyrim remake at full price. It does not make sense, there is no new gameplay or story, I already have over 300 hours logged on steam but that is because I LOVE that world and lore. At full price, the average gamer would most likely not buy a game they already have just  because of a graphical upgrade.

Remakes are not a bad thing. I would make an argument that remakes are good for the video game industry. It gives fans of a series something to do between releases of new games. Remakes also make extra revenue that can fund projects while not hurting productivity because remakes can be contracted out to other studios.

The original Arkham Batman games are not on the current generation consoles. So making a remake that takes advantage of modern day console power makes since but should not be sold at full price. Because a remake gives no new content but does take time and work to remake the game, it shouldn’t be sold too cheap. Finding a balance will be important for game developers who want to sell remakes. As long as remakes are bought, remakes will be sold.

No Man’s Sky Review Early (Readers Choice)!

Let’s start this review with a disclaimer: this review is still in progress and I am still early into the game. I have only six hours logged in the game according to Steam. No Man’s Sky is a good game but there is no way to could have lived up to the hype generated around the game. No Man’s Sky was announced when there were no other games offering the same universe exploring game play the game promised. Since then other games have come out including Star Citizen and Elite Dangerous which have do some things promised by No Man’s Sky and sometimes even better.

At first, the game could have been more optimized for PC. Even with a decent computer the game suffers from frame rate. Hello Games has released a fix improving performance and may continue to release patches improving performance.

The game begins with the player standing next to a crashed ship and the tutorial is fixing the ship up to begin your travels across the universe. Often the tutorial was vague and the goal was unclear.  I would have gotten off the planet sooner but I spent 20 minutes walking to a mineral I needed that I later realized was right next to my ship, but the scan detected ore 15 minutes away and could not detect the ore within eye shot.

The flying mechanics are fine, the only disappointment is that the ship will not fly closer to the ground but a mod fixed that. The flying in space and in atmosphere are not too different and the controls are relatively simple. Taking off can be a pain because every time my ship takes off it I lose 25% of the take off thruster fuel which is a pain to keep track off. Hopefully a better ship will fix that.

I set my goal in the game as becoming a space pirate. The space combat is pretty typical and the aim assist for targeting space ships is pretty handy. However, I can’t use my super boost when other ships are around which makes escape impossible sometimes and usually ends in death and that can be frustrating.

The market system is pretty simple. Going from one system to another the price of items can change. Two or three items usually sell for 100+ percent more and that is how I have most of my money. Grinding ores on planets that feel pretty cookie cutter has not been the most exciting game ever. The game feels too repetitive and slow paced. Often I get bored and leave the game without an urge to pick it back up.

Overall rating: 6/10

Readers Choice #1: John’s Adventure #1

The mud splashed up his boot. Looking down at the mess, John shook his head in frustration.

“I just cleaned these damn things,” he muttered under his breath.

He had been traveling for days now. The rain had been pouring relentlessly since he had entered this region and the cold had soaked down to his bones. He continued for a few more hours and had become more mindful of puddles on the ground and avoided them when he could. Just as his frustration was reaching a boiling point, he saw a castle in the distance. The structure consisted of a single spire reaching far into the sky topped by a steel bulwark that would protect archers if the fortress was ever under siege.

After what felt like an hour, John spotted a side road that he could safely assume made it’s way to the castle. Without hesitation he changed course and set out towards the castle. What he would tell the inhabitants never crossed his mind. The only thing that was populating John’s mind was visions of a warm meal.

When he envisioned the fluffy and soft towels, John nearly fell to the ground at the idea of being dry for the first time in days. The idea of walking on dry ground had John in such a trance that he did not notice the steps of the castle in front of  him. His foot kicked the first step and before John could snap out of his fantasy his face slammed face first into the steps.

John had to just lay on the steps for a few moments. The pain from his face seemed to pulse down his body. Looking down, John saw that he had scuffed up his clothes badly. A few spots even had blood on them from a cut or scrape. John removed the dirt from his clothes that the rain had not already removed and continued up the steps.

From this point the castle seemed to reach up past the rain clouds and into the heavens themselves. The few windows that the spire had were lit with an inviting warm yellow that made John yearn to be inside.

“My kingdom for a fire”, he muttered to himself.

The main entrance to the castle consisted of two fifteen foot high wooden doors. As he got closer he could see a door knocker that resembled the head of a goblin. John reached out to knock on the door when he was paralyzed by his thoughts. What would he tell the owners of this establishment? To allow him to take shelter in their home? He shrugged his shoulders.

“Time to put on the good ole John swagger,” he said to himself with a hint of cockiness and muttered a spell under his breath. He brushed his hair back with his hand. Instantly his face was filled with confidence and an energy that he had not had since he started this blasted journey. He reached his arm up and hit the door with three loud slams that he was sure would echo through the building.

To be continued…
